Picking Lab: Picking technologies under test
The Picking Lab of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics is a picking warehouse in miniature: Here, different technologies such as data glasses, pick-by-voice or classic pick lists with scanners can be tested. The Lab was created in 2021 as part...
We create new opportunities.
Research is not created in a vacuum, it is intended and carried out for people, for the economy and for society. That is why we attach great importance to exchanging information with stakeholders from a wide variety of fields as well as to informing them about our research results. From university to market, from technology to product, process or business model, from theory to practice: we ensure that research reaches its target.

Success stories
“Emili”, look over here: Study provides better interaction with autonomous container
Communication between people and technology plays a decisive role in the success of the social networked industry. How people can communicate intuitively with automated transport vehicles was the subject of a recent study by the ”Human-Technology Interaction” research clan at the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT.
Research clan implements new chatbot
With the C3DLO, the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Technology ISST has developed a chat bot that allows information to be retrieved in large volumes of data in natural language dialogues, even if the user does not know the filing structures. The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT was responsible for implementing the prototype.
First results from field study: Picking made easy
Smart technologies can be used in the picking areas at companies to help employees to pick different articles. The “Cognitive Ergonomy” research clan has carried out a field study and is still looking for companies for further investigations.
Helping founders with the Digital Hub Logistics
Research and development activities under the umbrella of the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT are currently generating new ideas and demonstrators that can form the nucleus for successful spin-offs. In cooperation with the Digital Hub Logistics, the Centre of Excellence encourages scientists to start a career as entrepreneurs.
Simulating cognitive stress, because “Humans are still irreplaceable”
There are 2,432,902,008,176,640,000 possible variants for planning a delivery tour with only 20 parcels. Humans cannot think these through alone – nevertheless the “human factor” remains irreplaceable in many logistic systems.
Identifying new research fields in inventory planning
Logistics costs account for around 16 percent of a company's total costs, while inventory costs account for around 50 percent of logistics costs. In this context, the IT service provider Brockhaus AG is enhancing its inventory planning together with the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT.
doctoral students have so far graduated from the Graduate School of Logistics.
