Our mission: Research together, achieve more.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT combines the leading research institutions in Dortmund as a scientific location to form an ecosystem for innovation with international appeal: We are making logistics the key scientific discipline of the industrial future.

At the intersection of logistics and IT.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT is working to further establish logistics as an academic discipline — in particular, the core technical aspects of logistics. At the same time, the participating institutions are focused on applying logistical principles to the handling of information and thereby strengthening it in the sense of information logistics.

Center of Excellence Logistics and IT in Dortmund has been in operation since 2017 and is currently run by a team of three. Benedikt Mättig and Maik Hausmann, both from the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML, and the team is completed by Hendrik Haße from the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST.

As a center of excellence, we see ourselves as a link and incubator for transferring the numerous ideas
and research results from the Dortmund location into practice. We supervise and support the project teams from the brainstorming stage through to communication and application of the results with partners in the field.

Institutions

Cutting-edge research under one roof.

Scientific institutions that are already shaping and advancing logistics research in their own right are working together under the umbrella of the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT At the Center of Excellence, they are now working together synergistically to build a national infrastructure and an open innovation ecosystem — from basic research to applied research, in collaboration with industry. The research services and results are used directly within the participating institutions – whether in teaching, in doctoral theses and student research projects or in the context of contract research, including in the associated Enterprise Labs. This has resulted in a constantly updated and direct transfer stream from research to teaching and application.

Ready for the challenges of the future.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT acts as an incubator, connecting experts and supporting the connectivity of research results. In doing so, it selects suitable exploitation channels for technologies, methods, and results and provides support in the successful utilization. It is a point of contact and mediator for industry and commerce and transfers practical requirements back to the world of research. It thus qualifies individuals, organizations, and companies for current and future challenges in a needs-oriented manner.

Initiatives and networks

The diverse innovation ecosystem in Dortmund

In addition to the participating institutions, the logistics and IT innovation ecosystem also includes the following initiatives and organizations, with which the Center of Excellence is in close contact. Each of the initiatives pursues its own thematic approach, which contributes in a special way to the work of the Performance Center. Direct interactions arise from the collaboration with the initiative “Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Ruhr-OWL” to promote digital projects in small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as with Digital Hub Logistics to support start-ups and spin-offs. The Graduate School of Logistics also plays a prominent role as a hallmark of excellence at the Performance Center.

Partners

More than the sum of its parts.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT thrives on collaboration with partners from industry and academia. Pilot projects are carried out in collaboration with industry partners in the form of so-called Enterprise Labs. Here, process innovations and radical technical innovations beyond day-to-day business are created, new software technologies are developed, and applied to logistics. Associated partners support the Center of Excellence in holistically developing the field of logistics and IT, and benefit from the corresponding research results.

Our lab partners

The pharmaceutical company is working with Fraunhofer ISST at the Boehringer Ingelheim Lab to develop new technologies in the field of data-driven life science business. The pilot project with the performance center focuses specifically on information logistics based on the Industrial Data Space®.

Our associated partners

The Graduate School (GRK) enables particularly qualified doctoral students from various disciplines to work on their dissertations in collaboration with numerous scientific institutions at TU Dortmund University.

The Center for Entrepreneurship & Transfer (CET) at TU Dortmund University is an Excellence Start-up Center.NRW recognized by the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Economic Affairs, which combines systematic transfer and start-up support with targeted research on entrepreneurial topics.

The Chair of Computer Graphics (Computer Science VII) deals with application-oriented methods such as machine learning, visualization, and human-technology interaction.

Our other supporters

The city of Dortmund considers the commitment of the Center of Excellence to be essential for shaping Dortmund as a promising location for science and business, and supports the Center of Excellence’s efforts to strengthen logistics research at the interface between logistics and IT.
