Motion mining technology now integrated in the Picking Lab

Over the past six months, the Picking Lab team has been working on a transfer project with Dortmund-based company MotionMiners. The aim was to expand the Picking Lab’s offering and supplement the existing technologies. The Picking Lab is a small picking test warehouse in the ZFT hall, which was created a few years ago as part of the Logistics and IT Performance Center.

In a performance center transfer project, the Picking Lab team has integrated Motion Mining® technology into the test center. The technology makes it possible to record anonymous process data in a time-efficient manner and to analyze manual workflows in order to uncover efficiency and ergonomics potential.

Motion Mining® technology offers numerous advantages:

  • Automated data acquisitionInertial measuring units are used to record movement data from people and objects. This data is evaluated anonymously in order to generate key figures such as throughput times, area utilization or handling heights.
  • Benchmarking of pick-by technologiesIn the Picking Lab, industry- and case-specific demo picking processes can be flexibly created and different technologies and strategies can be compared. This enables a KPI-based comparison of pick-by technologies (e.g. pick-by-light) and logistics IT systems (e.g. warehouse management systems).
  • Possible applicationsIn addition to the fixed installation in the Picking Lab, a mobile set is also available. The technology can be used for picking studies, workshops and manual processes in companies. Data is evaluated via the MPI platform (Motion Miners Process Intelligence) or via the Jupiter Notebook interface for raw data evaluation.

Our aim is to work together across departments and use Motion Mining® technology in other projects and use cases. We invite you to take a closer look at this technology and explore possible fields of application in different areas.
