Research together and achieve more.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT, one of 17 centres of excellence run by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Germany, pools scientific work and research in logistics and IT at our location in Dortmund. We strengthen the networks within the scientific community. We stand for excellent research – including the development and application of the latest technologies, and for transferring the results from the world of science into industry.

Institutions

Top research in one location.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT brings together a range of scientific institutions that, each in its own way, are already at the forefront of shaping and fostering logistics research. In the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT, they are not only building up a national infrastructure together, but, together with industry, are also creating a synergetic innovation ecosystem – covering everything from fundamental research to applied research. The research services and results are used directly within the participating institutions – whether in teaching, in doctoral theses and student research projects or in the context of contract research, including in the associated Enterprise Labs. This has resulted in a constantly updated and direct transfer stream from research to teaching and application.

Scientific expertise

At the interface of logistics and IT.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT is working to further establish logistics – and the technical core of logistics in particular – as a scientific discipline. At the same time, the participating institutions are concerned with transferring the principles of logistics to the way information is handled while simultaneously strengthening them in terms of information logistics.

The transformation of logistics and production into new organizational forms such as an inter-company social networked industry, which is based on the organizational principle of social networks, is of particular importance. In the social networked industry, the focus is on people as an essential element. They play a decisive role in production and logistics, while at the same time, the way they are integrated in and interact with technical systems is undergoing significant changes.

Fit for the challenges of the future.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT identifies current trends and technologies and bundles preliminary research. It connects experts with each other and fosters the connectivity of research results. It selects suitable ways of exploiting technologies, methods and results and supports their successful exploitation. It is the contact and mediator for industry and commerce and transfers practical requirements back to the world of research. It prepares people, organizations and companies to meet the needs of current and future challenges.

Initiatives and networks

An innovative ecosystem that continues to grow.

In addition to the institutions involved, the following initiatives and organizations, which enjoy close contacts to the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT, are also part of the logistics and IT innovation ecosystem. Each of the initiatives pursues its own thematic approach, and make special contributions to the work of the Center of Excellence. Direct interactions result from the cooperations with the “Digital in NRW – expertise for SMEs” initiative to promote digital projects in small and medium-sized enterprises and with the Digital Hub Logistics which supports start-ups and spin-offs. The Graduate School of Logistics also plays a key role as a part of the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT.

Partners

More than the sum of its parts.

The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT thrives on cooperation with partners from the worlds of industry and science. Pilot projects in the form of so-called Enterprise Labs are carried out together with industrial partners. Process innovations and radical technical innovations are developed beyond day-to-day business, new software technologies are developed and transferred to logistics applications. Associated partners help Center of Excellence Logistics and IT to open up the field of logistics and IT as a whole and also benefit from the results of the research.
