The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) is becoming increasingly important in logistics. The Centre of Excellence and Fraunhofer IML therefore wanted to find out with an online survey what the status of the implementation of current and planned projects as well as the information needs are from the user’s point of view.
Two weeks, two digital lectures and three digital workshops were this year’s replacement program for the PhD School of Logistics – the Summer School of the Graduate School of Logistics, which unfortunately had to be cancelled this year due to Corona/COVID-19 in its original personal format. Over 35 participants from seven different countries took part in the free series. This year, not only doctoral students were admitted, but also company representatives and other interested parties from logistics and IT. The main topic was “Digital Twins in Logistics and Supply Chain Management”.
The Leibniz Institute for Labour Research at the TU Dortmund University (IfADo) has developed a new gait laboratory as part of its activities in the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT. The Gait Real-Time Analysis Interactive Lab (GRAIL) enables realistic research approaches thanks to three-dimensional gait analysis. GRAIL will investigate how many cognitive resources walking requires. In order to systematically analyse such phenomena, the IfADo additionally analyses brain activity by means of electroencephalography (EEG).
From 15 to 17 June, the International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation 2020 took place virtually, inviting researchers, innovators and engineers to exchange and discuss the latest findings, developments and experiences relating to the central theme of digitisation. Instead of Cardiff, the conference took place in digital space due to Corona.
Despite the corona pandemic, this workstream deals intensively with Mixed Reality (XR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), which have become an integral part of the logistics industry. In a new image film, Christoph Schlüter and his colleagues tell you about the work and success of the workstream and the possibilities of using XR and VR in logistics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvdiADK3onE
On 12 May, a presence day in the Rotterdam Sharehouse between researchers from the Netherlands and Dortmund was originally planned. Due to the corona pandemic this could not take place in this form. Instead, this exchange was successfully accomplished through a sequence of Microsoft Teams Meeting. In three sessions, the 25 Netherlands and Dortmund researchers discussed ideas for cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence and logistics and agreed on steps for further cooperation.
